Black Choker

Black Choker

What do y’all think about chokers?

Depending on the outfit worn with them, they can present a rough, romantic, classic, etc. vibe.  Really, they can be worn with just about any outfit, to just about any occasion.

Where to Wear?

The outfit above is casual, but dressy enough for many events such as a concert, a play, dinner date, night out with friends, brunch, and much more.

Throw on a blazer instead of the leather jacket, and it would work for casual Friday at a relatively conservative office environment.  If your office environment is more creative, this type of outfit may work any day of the week.

Ladies, when I present an outfit, I’m not really saying you should go out and blow your entire paycheck on one item, such as the purse above.  What I am presenting is simply a “look.”

The idea is for you to see how pieces can come together to form a cohesive, appropriate, classic and elegant look.  That’s the point of the posts, not to showcase expensive, designer items.

What I hope happens is that you get ideas, and then use those ideas to shop your closets, first, and put different pieces that you may already own, together, and see how it all looks and feels.

I know, you are now asking me, “why do you show us all these expensive pieces, then?”  Ok, good point, and that is certainly a valid question.  My answer:

IT’S FUN!! and

Sometimes those are the only pieces I can find that work with the colors of the outfit – I’m showing  and putting together “pictures” of outfits, not the real look of them.  In doing that, I am more limited in my choices.  As you experiment with the looks, change things up if they don’t look great in “real life.”  Pictures are just that – pretty visuals!

Investment Pieces:

With the exception of the choker, all of the other pieces in this outfit can be classified as investment pieces, not because of their price tag, but because of the amount of use that you can get out of them as you coordinate them with the other items of your wardrobes.

88th Oscars

88th Oscars

The Academy Awards

Will you be glued to the TV, tonight?  What do you love the most about the Academy Awards, is it the styles, the monologue, the competition, the glamour?

Do you wonder what some of the actresses and actors will be wearing?  The gowns are quite beautiful, aren’t they?

Is that too many questions for a Sunday morning?  lol

Where to Wear?

Certainly wear the above outfit to the Academy Awards.  Wear it to any formal event, perhaps a GALA of some type, a wedding, maybe a very formal dinner date.

Investment Pieces

The jewelry, for sure, would be an investment.  It’s so beautiful and can certainly be worn with more casual and/or work outfits.

The clutch is an investment piece and would work with many evening and formal outfits.

The dress and shoes are a bit tricky.  If you don’t often go to formal events, but one comes up, I would recommend borrowing these items from a friend. (or even a friend’s mother – we older women have more long gowns in our closets than our young adult daughters.)  I wouldn’t reccommend that you go out and spend a lot of money for a formal dress and shoes that you will only wear once.

As a family, we love movies.  When all of the kids were younger and living at home, we would print out the ballots, vote, and then sit down as a family to watch the show.  It was exciting and fun to see who would get the most right picks.

The other thing we did as a family was to try and see all of the nominated movies before the show.  It gave us all a certain anticipation for the big night.

This year, it has been a bit different.  I’m not really sure why.  Perhaps it is because I have gone back to work and haven’t had as much time to see the nominated movies, or perhaps, with three of our four kids living on their own, the experience isn’t quite the same?  I don’t know what it is, but it is making me feel somewhat nostalgic.

The only nominated movie I’ve seen is the Martian.  How many nominated movies have y’all seen?  Who do you think will win the big categories?

Have fun tonight watching the 88th Academy Awards!!

Cable Knit

Romwe Cable Knit

Cable Knit

The cable knit sweater has been around forever, hasn’t it?  Do y’all own one?

I think of it as a classic piece.  It can be styled in so many different ways.  As shown above, very, very casual, pair it with a pair of skinny jeans for a casual look, wear it over a dress of skirt for a more dressed-up look and so on.

Although it can be dressed-up, I do think of the cable knit sweater as a casual piece.

Where to Wear?

The outfit above is super casual.  It can be worn lounging around the house, grocery shopping, a very casual family get-together, studying (if you are in school, yes, you should go do that now), coffee shop, etc.

Even in the most casual of office environments, I would not recommend wearing this type of outfit to work.  I’m not a fan of sweat pants (or leggings worn as pants) in the office environment.  I suppose I would wear this to the office on a Saturday – when the office is not officially opened.

Investment Pieces

The purse and watch, of course, would be investment pieces.  (I’m loving the color of the bag- and know that this would coordinate so well with other pieces in my wardrobe).

The sneakers are certainly a casual investment piece as is the cable knit sweater.

Even a pair of sweat pants could become an investment piece.  We all need something in which to lounge around the house.  Sweat pants are perfect for that activity-choose a pair that is comfortable, but still looks good on you.  (As comfortable as your boyfriend’s or husband’s sweat pants may be, I would suggest staying away from that look. :))

Happy lounging, my friends!!

Rainy Day Errands

Rainy Day Errands

You wake up on a Saturday morning and it’s raining outside.  First instinct is to stay in bed as long as you can – why not, right?  But then, you realize, you have a few errands to run.

If, on a rainy day, you must get out and about, at least you can feel better by dressing cute and appropriate for the weather.

What to Wear

If it is cool outside, choose an outfit similar to the one shown above.  A pair of skinny jeans, a warm, comfy sweater, a scarf, your casual raincoat, certainly an umbrella, and preferably a tote that can handle the rain and not get ruined.

This is also the perfect day to test out that dry shampoo you bought last time you were at the drug store.  Twirl your hair up in a bun or fun, messy, easy updo, and you are ready.

Now, go tackle those errands and when you get back home, treat yourself to a nice cup of hot chocolate – you deserve it!!

Investment Pieces:

Rain boots, pearl earings, nice umbrella, tote bag.

Spring in Winter

Work Week - SpringLike

Spring in Winter

Why not pull out one of your spring or summer dresses and wear it now, in February?  Living in Texas, this is certainly possible.  With February temperatures in the 60’s and low 70’s, lately, an outfit like the one shown above would work.

What I love about this dress is that it can be worn to so many different functions.  Styled as it is above, it is certainly appropriate for work.  It would also work for church, a baby or wedding shower, a dinner out, brunch, etc.  So versatile.

We all need a print dress (or two) in our closets.  Choose one where the colors coordinate well with the rest of your wardrobe and one that looks amazing on you.  Keep the style similar to what compliments your figure the best.

Investment Pieces:

Coat, dress, blazer, purse, watch, earings.
